The Return of the Situational Deck
by Toni Puhle, author of REDFeather’s newest release: Rainbow Kipper (with artist Steven Bright).
The Kipper Cards are making a comeback with many readers grabbing for their favorite decks and laying down a predictive read that amazes the sitter in situational accuracy. This German system dates back to the 19th century and the original deck highlights moments in the everyday Biedermeier lifestyle.
But how is Kipper becoming so applicable in modern-day life and why are readers jumping into the system now?
The Kipper System is simple and easy to pick up quickly, allowing any reader to start reading fluently within a matter of minutes. It is this ease of reference and rapid reading style that amazes Tarot readers around the world, as the reader is served with a clear and predictive style that announces events as they will happen. Kipper shows a storyboard of the future, laid out moment by moment and underlining the path that the sitter will take — as easy as a dot to dot picture.
In addition, the Kipper cards lend themselves perfectly to modern-day life, with scenes that cover everything from an office location to the challenges of interpersonal relationships. We can see our own surroundings appear in the simple settings of the cards, enabling us to read the future like the fortune-tellers of old.
No more wondering what will happen next, the Kipper spread lays it out like a comic book: All the reader has to do is say what they see!
The three-second analysis required with the Kipper Cards means that when a reader lays down the cards, they know within 3 seconds whether the answer is good, bad, or just plain ugly! We can also understand whether the sitter will experience a positive, solid relationship within the timeframe or whether a rocky patch is ahead. Laying Kipper Cards couldn’t be easier, with a simple key phrase on each card sufficient to start the story’s unfolding. When considering the questions asked, we can answer all the common questions —
“Does he love me?”
“Will I get a pay rise?”
“Am I on the right track?”
— within the bat of an eye.
One of the easiest ways to analyze the meaning of a reading swiftly is using the “easy” versus “challenging” cards that surround our Main Characters in the deck. We determine the nature of the situation by using the directionality in our Kipper deck. Main Characters have a direction of view, a way they are facing. The card that lies ahead (in the direction of view) suggests an “auspicious” situation — one that will be favorable for the Sitter. The card behind the Main Character’s back is the “inauspicious” situation — one that will be challenging to the Sitter.
Shuffle your Kipper Deck, set your intention to understand your current situation. You will look through the deck after shuffling and will remove 3 cards from the deck. The Main Character represents you and the two cards on either side. When you lay them down on the table you will see you have your Main Character plus one card that he/she looks onto (the “auspicious” card) and one card that he/she has behind their back (the “inauspicious” card). Below we have two examples:
In this first reading, our Male Sitter has challenging monetary times in the week ahead (11 Win Lots behind his back) but his travel plans will go ahead (10 Journey ahead).
For the second reading, our Female Sitter is somewhat apathetic in the situation (22 Expectation) behind her back but she will retrieve her losses (24 Theft ahead).
As you see from the above examples, it is easy to pick out the information using basic placement and card meanings. This is why Kipper is making a comeback! Many who have read Tarot for years are now dipping their toes in this insightful 32 Card System.
Now we want to hear from you: What do you think is a strength of the Kipper system? Why do you love the situational deck?
