The Sud Aviation Caravelle was a French jet airliner produced from the 1950s through the 1970s. A recently published book authored by Wolfgang Borgmann provides a complete history of the aircraft, along with a detailed technical description. The book even includes anecdotes and photos of ephemera from the extensive marketing efforts that various airlines put behind the plane.
The excerpt below describes several of the quirky initiatives undertaken by the Caravelle’s first operator, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS):
In the late 1950s, Caravelle fever was rampant in norther Europe. Alongside the recipe book and the tableware available in the shops, Caravelle restaurants sprouted like mushrooms at the major airports. However, the climax of this unbridled enthusiasm for the S.E. 210 was the song “Caravelle Samba,” specially commissioned by SAS for this aircraft type.
